ETICS (thin render)
Hydraulic Render (thick)

Thin-coat external wall insulation (Weber, Sto, Baumit) vs thick hydraulic render EWI — two approaches to insulating and protecting your facade over the long term.

  • ETICS: the European standard for 80% of projects
  • Hydraulic render: unbeatable impact resistance and longevity
  • Both can qualify for Klimabonus grants if R ≥ 3.7 (see myenergy.lu)

Thin or thick render: a matter of context

ETICS (External Thermal Insulation Composite System) is the most widespread external wall insulation system in Europe. It combines bonded/mechanically fixed insulation + a reinforcing mesh + a thin finishing render (3-5mm). Hydraulic render, on the other hand, is a sprayed cement render 15 to 25mm thick, applied over mechanically fixed insulation.

Both systems insulate — but they do not behave the same way against impact, moisture and time. The impact resistance of hydraulic render makes it essential at exposed ground-floor levels or in high-traffic areas.

Option A

ETICS (thin render)

Bonded insulation + 3-5mm thin render. Weber, Sto, Baumit. Varied finishes (scraped, floated, ribbed). Lightweight, quick to install. The European standard for residential and commercial EWI.

Option B

Hydraulic Render (thick)

Mechanically fixed insulation + 15-25mm cement render. Robust, impact- and splash-resistant. Authentic mineral appearance. Suited to exposed facades and ground-floor levels.

Notre recommandation

ETICS as standard, hydraulic render for reinforcement

For 80% of residential and commercial projects in Luxembourg, ETICS is the right choice: proven, economical, quick to install, with varied finishes.

Hydraulic render comes into its own when the facade is exposed to impact (ground floor, public thoroughfares), when a thick mineral appearance is desired, or when 50-year durability is the priority.

QUASART masters both systems and can combine them on the same building — ETICS on upper floors, hydraulic render at the base and in sensitive zones for an optimal technical and economic result.

Tout ce que vous devez savoir

Réponses directes aux questions que nos clients nous posent le plus souvent sur ce sujet.

Yes, but with a suitable system — the polystyrene must be high density (grey EPS 032 or PIR) and the mechanical fixing reinforced to support the weight of the render. QUASART sizes the substrate according to the relevant DTU standards.
Both ETICS and hydraulic render can qualify for Klimabonus grants in Luxembourg, provided the underlying insulation achieves R ≥ 3.7 m²·K/W. The type of render does not affect eligibility. Consult myenergy.lu for the current criteria.
A properly installed ETICS (bonded over a minimum of 40% of the surface + safety anchors) does not debond. The debonding issues observed on older sites are linked to unprepared substrates or unsuitable adhesives. QUASART follows manufacturer specifications (Weber, Sto, Baumit) to the letter.
